Adoption Policies:
Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment. Please consider the time and money required to own a pet before you make the decision to adopt.

All dogs that are available for adoption have passed a temperament test and heartworm test, and are listed with any known history.

Cats have passed a feline leukemia test and have been interacted with to know their personalities.

Animals generally remain available for adoption as long as their good health and behavior continue.

HART cannot make any guarantees to the animal’s personality, health and behaviors once it leaves the shelter. Please note that HART is unable to reimburse adopters or veterinarians for post-adoption medical expenses. Adopters assume full responsibility for the animal’s care upon adoption.

H.A.R.T. reserves the right to refuse any adoption.
HART takes in about 2,000 surrendered animals per years and adopts out a large percentage of this number. HART wants every adoption experience to be the best it can possibly be. To be able to do this HART needs to have established adoption policies.

1.) An adopter must be 18 years of age or older to adopt an animal.

2.) A current photo ID is required.

3.) All potential adopters must fill out an adoption application and have it approved before adopting.

4.) If an adopter rents, written permission for pet ownership, must be supplied prior to adoption.

5.) All animals adopted from HART MUST be spayed or neutered, no exceptions. This is included in the adoption fee. If the animal has not been altered adopter will pay a $50.00 refundable deposit at time of adoption. These spay/neuters are scheduled at the time of adoption.

6.) The adopter has a 2-week “Get- Acquainted” period from the date of adoption, during which the animal may be returned for any reason. A voucher for the adoption fee minus $15.00 will be issued. This can be used to adopt another animal. No monetary refunds will be given unless the animal has been diagnosed with a life threatening illness by s veterinarian.

7.) If at any time an adopter can no longer care for the animal it is required that HART be notified.

8.) HART adoption fees are: $150.00 for most dogs and $75.00 for most cats. Sometimes there will be a promotion on cats when the fee would be reduced.
