Impound:

Meet the Brainerd Lakes Area Animal Control Officer, Jake Herrmann. Join his Lakes Area Animal Control and Enforcement Facebook page.

If you find an animal running at large and have it contained you can call HART at (218) 829-4141 or Animal Control at (218) 829-0991 to find out if you are in a contracted impound area. Some areas that have pickup will depends upon the location. Some areas may not have cat pickup. These areas may include:

Baxter, Brainerd, Breezy Point, Center TWP, Chichamaw Beach, Crosby, Crow Wing County(Dangerous dogs only), Cuyuna, Deerwood, Fairfield TWP, Garrison, Ironton, Lake Shore, Maple Grove TWP, Nisswa, Oaklawn TWP, Pequot Lakes (Jenkins), Riverton.

If you are in a contracted impound area, Animal Control will come and pick the animal up from you. The animal needs to be contained. After calling animal control, if the animal is out of his jurisdiction, check here.

ALL IMPOUNDED ANIMALS MUST BE HELD FOR SEVEN (7) DAYS FOR AN OWNER TO CLAIM. THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS IF THE PET IS VERY AGGRESSIVE, INJURED OR SICK.

All animals picked up from impound will be charged a pick up fee according to the Animal Control contract held between Animal Control and the municipality.

HART is only the holding facility for these animals and receives a boarding fee per day.
If an owner does not claim the animal it becomes property of HART on day eight (8).

All animals are scanned for a microchip by Animal Control and again by HART when the animal comes into the shelter. If the animal is chipped and the chip has been registered the owner will be contacted.

If an animal is wearing identification, Animal Control will attempt to contact owner before bringing the animal to HART.

All impounded animals are advertised in the local paper.

If you lost your pet, check our inhouse database to see if your pet is here.

Due to confidentiality, HART cannot give out any information regarding the final disposition of the animal once it has been surrendered. If the surrendered animal passes all testing, it will be available on the adoption floor.

Please do not drop off an animal in a crate or box, tie it to the fence or put it in the fenced area. It is unfair to the animal and against the law.
